The defense was especially key in the 1987 season, when the Redskins finished the year with an 11-4 win-loss record and defeated the Denver Broncos 42-10 in the Super Bowl. In 1991 Gibbs assembled one of the most explosive offensive units in NFL history. Quarterback Mark Rypien led the National Football Conference (NFC) in yardage, and running back Earnest Byner and wide receivers Gary Clark and Art Monk each topped the 1,000 yard mark for the season. Washington Redskins also fielded the second strongest defensive pack in the National Football League (NFL).

After the season the Washington Redskins defeated the Buffalo Bills 37-24 in Super Bowl XXVI. Assistant Richie Petitbone replaced Gibbs after the 1992 season.. After a year, Petitbone was replaced by former Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Norv Turner. The Redskins were one of the weaker teams in the league for much of the mid and late 1990s, but they rebounded in 1999 and lead in their division. Washington Redskins are a professional football team in the National Football League (NFL) and one of the four teams playing in the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC).

The Washington Redskins play at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, and wear uniforms of burgundy, gold, and white. In football’s early days, Washington was one of the game’s most powerful clubs, capturing two league crowns and posting ten consecutive winning records from 1936 to 1945. Leading the Redskins’ high scoring offense where two time rushing champion Cliff Battles and six time passing champion Sammy Baugh, both eventually got honored to Footballs Hall of Fame. The Redskins fielded strong teams between 1971 to 1992, getting to the playoffs thirteen times, playing in five Super Bowls, and winning three of them.

June 2002, to honor the Redskins' 70th anniversary, a blue-ribbon panel selected the 70 Greatest Redskins, a prestigious group of players and coaches who were significant on-field contributor to the team's five world championships and magnificent history.

The 70 Greats were honored in a weekend of revels, Oct. 25-27 of 2002, culminating in a special halftime ceremony during the Washington Redskins ' 26-21 win over the Indianapolis Colts in a nationally televised Sunday night game.

Spanning the whole history of the team since its founding in Boston in 1932, the 70 Greatest Redskins encompassed three head coaches and 67 players. They there a tableau of accomplishments from the franchise's very early stages, represented by Turk Edwards and Cliff Battles from the Redskins' 1932 opening roster, through the 2002 season, represented by Darrell Green. Head coaches Ray Flaherty, George Allen and Joe Gibbs were selected since of their outstanding record of coaching achievements. Flaherty led the 1937 and 1942 teams to NFL championship, Allen led the 1972 Washington Redskins team to the Super Bowl, and Gibbs led the team to four Super Bowls, winning three times in a 10-year span from 1982-91.

The majority Valuable Players of Gibbs' three Super Bowl championships also show on the list: quarterbacks Doug Williams (1987) and Mark Rypien (1991) and running back John Riggins (1982). Quarterback Joe Theismann, who command the team the year Riggins won his MVP award, is also on the list.
